Bullshit

Today, a consortium of the major media networks decided to exclude Elizabeth May from the Leader's debates, seemingly because even though the Greens finally have an MP, three party leaders threw a hissy fit. That's right: Stephen Harper said it just wasn't fair. Apparently that's the "strong leadership" that we're all better off with. What a pile of crap. And evidently the Prime Minister wasn't alone in proving this pathetic lack of leadership. Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe threatened not to attend if Ms. May were permitted to join in. This sounds like some sort of playground spat at an elementary school. These people are supposed to be trying to earn our votes, and prove that they are worthy of our trust. Instead, Stephen Harper, Jack Layton, and Gilles Duceppe have stomped their feet and bullied the networks into depriving the Canadian people of a fair choice this election. This combination of immaturity and arrogance is not befitting of anybody seeking political power.

Shame on the networks, and on the Conservatives, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois for their extortion tactics. What a bunch of bullshit. Time to grow up, gentlemen.

Not true.

maybe things would be better off if Jack Layton didn't attend, or Duceppe, or Harper for that matter. Time for the end of the good ole boys club. Be afraid, be very afraid of May.

In news it is also reported that

Liberals position: "I would like her to be there, but "I will not participate if Stephen Harper is not there."

And that Mr. Dion said yesterday his priority is to face off against his Conservative counterpart ahead of the Oct. 14 election.

It appears that Mr. Dion wanted a public tat-to-tat with Harper, and thus excluding the other parties from this "only two debate."

Hopefully, Liberal/Greens will be outraged and post all day about this undemocratic and unprincipled move by the liberals. Hmm....

There would have been little point to the debates if Harper wasn't there, backed out. THAT is what Dion meant. He wants everyone there including May. Why is that so difficult for some to understand?

I love this whole "wouldn't show up" BULLSHIT... really... the networks offer up several free prime time hours and there's a leader out there who doesn't want that exposure... PLEASE.

Also... it was bad enough when the media determined who can participate without clearly set out guidelines... but now party leaders with an obvious bias are deciding... can someone PLEASE ask Elections Canada to set some guidelines... this whole affair is just disgusting.

To rp: absolutely true. NDP spokesperson Brad Lavigne confirmed, on behalf of the party, that Mr. Layton would refuse to attend the debates if Elizabeth May were permitted to join. Furthermore, the network consortium noted that the leaders of three political parties threatened not to show up if Ms. May were included. Since the Liberals have been fighting to allow her voice to be heard, the only three parties left are the Bloc, the Tories, and the NDP. Mr. Layton threatened not to show, the networks confirmed it, and so did his own party. So, that comment was both fair and completely accurate.

alberta girl: The Prime Minister said it would be unfair to include Elizabeth May, because apparently she cares about the environment, and so do the Liberals, while he doesn't. In his eyes, that makes the two parties one and the same, and allowing them both to participate wouldn't be fair. Stupid.

Don't be ridiculous, the reason that May isn't in the debates is because she is in the tank for another party and another party leader. May and Dion made their bed, she put the mint on the pillow when she broadcasted her support for Brent Fullard on the same day that the consortium was making the decision. I am sorry that Dion needs her to explain his tax policy but in the end he will have to muddle through without her.

Let's be honest. May is not in the debates because Harper and Layton said they would not participate if May participated. The CBC Ombudsman reviewed the situation in 2006 and made recommendations, which if they were followed, would have May included in the debates. The media group accepted that report and could not argue that they were excluding May based on any objective measures. They argued that to include May would result in a debate with fewer leaders, because of the boycott threats, and they chose to maximize the number of leaders in the debate, subject to the criteria.

No potential Conservative voters seem to care that May is excluded, but potential NDP voters do. Layton either feels sufficiently threatened or sufficiently beholden to Harper, that he is willing to risk that backlash of voters. Interesting.

patricia, I hate to say this, but your response is just more of the same bullshit that the other party leaders have been trying to feed us. You can talk about mints on the pillow all you like, but the reality is that this so-called mint is nothing more than Elizabeth May being realistic. She knows full well that she's not about to go from 1 seat to a government. Then again, Jack Layton isn't going to be PM either, nor is Gilles Duceppe, but they are still allowed in. Elizabeth May is the only minor party leader who has the grapes to admit that she won't be PM, and that based on that, she believes that Dion is the best choice. If you want to make your argument, just admit that what you're really saying is that May should be excluded for being honest about her electoral chances. Beyond that, your argument isn't holding much water at all.
